What is Brain Plasticity?
Brain plasticity, also known as neuroplasticity, refers to the brain’s ability to change and adapt in response to experiences and behaviors. It is the brain’s capacity to reorganize itself, creating new neural connections and pathways throughout life. 

The concept of brain plasticity suggests that the human brain can be molded like plastic, and that it can continue to develop and change throughout life, even into old age. This adaptation takes place through the reorganization of synaptic connections in response to new experiences, learning or changes in the environment.

Some examples of brain plasticity include:

1. Learning a new skill: When we learn something new, our brain creates new neural networks among particular neurons, reinforcing specific patterns and strengthening new connections between brain regions.

2. Recovery from injury: If a person experiences a brain injury, the brain may reorganize its neural connections to compensate for lost function. Over time, new networks may be generated as a result of rehabilitation therapies and training.

3. Adjustment to new environments: When people move to new places, their brains adapt to new environmental stimuli, shaping different mental maps necessary to negotiate their surroundings.


Barriers to Brain Plasticity

As humans we tend to believe that we are learning information from a clear slate. However there is an overwhelming influence of our past conversations, experiences, and beliefs on our perception of reality. What we hear, see, and feel is filtered through our past experiences and that can lead to distorted interpretations based on the assumptions we make of who we are and how things should be.


When students participate in lectures they have a sense of how the lecture will be and how they will receive that information. If their past experiences were not beneficial then they enter the lecture with a negative weight in their belief system. When it comes to perceiving current events, people often rely on their past experiences as a reference point for what is happening around them and this colors an individual’s interpretation of current events and influences their thoughts.

By understanding how our mind uses previous information to understand new information we can create a process that utilizes this natural function. We can learn to question our assumptions and approach information more open-mindedly. We can improve our active listening skills and conscious awareness to make decisions based on what is truly needed in the moment.

Increasing Brain Plasticity


There are several methods that can increase brain plasticity, including:

1. Learning new things: Novel experiences stimulate the brain and promote the formation of new neural pathways, increasing brain plasticity. Reading, taking up a new hobby, and challenging yourself to create a rise in emotion with puzzles or games are simple ways to create new neural connections.

2. Exercise: Physical exercise is good for the brain as well as for the body. It increases blood flow to the brain, delivering more oxygen and vital nutrients which help to promote the creation of new neurons.

3. Meditation: Regular meditation can help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression while also promoting brain plasticity. Mindfulness meditation can also aid in strengthening connections between neural networks.

4. Practice: Consistently practicing any skill or behavior will strengthen the corresponding neural network in the brain, thereby promoting increased plasticity.

5. Get enough sleep: During sleep, the brain forms and strengthens neural connections, committing those connections to long-term memory. Therefore, getting adequate sleep is critical to brain plasticity and functioning.

6. Reduce Screen Time: Extended periods of screen time have been linked to reduced brain plasticity, which acts as a cause of long term damage to the brain.

7. Harness Emotions: Allow positive emotions from past memories or events to flow freely and channel the energy into new activities.

8. Stimulating Environment: Conventional study tips encourage students to study in quiet stress free environments. However, when attempting to recall information using strategies such as flashcards, try to find a mildly stressful environment, or time yourself or get in the hot seat amongst a group of friends. This can create a sense of pressure or a challenge that can help you increase brain function.

Overall, practicing healthy habits and keeping an active and engaged lifestyle can have significant impacts on brain plasticity. By making small lifestyle adjustments, one can improve their ability to learn, adapt, and thrive throughout life.

In summary, brain plasticity is the scientific understanding that our brains are not static systems and can change in function, structure, and reorganization in response to experience throughout life. This insight opens new possibilities for treatments of neurological disorders and gives hope that the brain can remain responsive and vital even in old age.
